 The Graduate Diploma Programme in Defence Technology and Systems (DDTS)

DDTS 2004
Forty five DDTS 2004 students completed their DDTS Programme and were conferred with Graduate Diploma in Defence Technology and Systems in February 2005.  These students received their Diploma scrolls at the 36th Command and Staff Course Graduation Ceremony held on 7 September 2005 at Istana.  We congratulate David Lee Chee Wei who was awarded the Book Prize for being the top student of the programme.

DDTS 2005
The 6th DDTS Programme, DDTS 2005, with 37 students, 34 MINDEF officers and 3 ST Engineers, commenced on 27 June 2005.

    
 

  The Masters Programme In Defence Technology and Systems (MDTS)

MDTS 2003

(1) Distinctive Awards
The second batch of MDTS students completed the MDTS Programme in December 2004.  At the end of the NPS phase, two MDTS students won distinctive awards from NPS:

  • Mr Koh Jin Hou won the Naval Postgraduate School Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for International Students.  This award is presented to a graduating military or civilian non-US citizen student who has exhibited outstanding academic achievement, conducted notable thesis research, maintained motivation and a serious interest in the community, and who has interacted well with other students in the interest of international alliance.
     

  • Mr Ong Chin Siang won the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Award.  The award is presented to the graduate who has achieved academic excellence and best demonstrated professional qualities in the programme.

(2) July 2005 Commencement
The MDTS 2003 students participated in the NUS Commencement Ceremony on 7 July 2005 where 26 students received the M.Sc. (DTS) degree.  Among them were 3 students who had specialized in Land Systems also received their M.Sc. (Mech Eng) degree at the same Commencement Ceremony.

(3) July 2005 Graduation Ceremony
TDSI also organized a MDTS Graduation Ceremony on 7 July 2005 to commemorate the graduation of the 2nd batch of MDTS students.  The guest of honour for the ceremony was Chief Defence Science Scientist, Prof Lui Pao Chuen.  About 200 guests attended the ceremony.  During the ceremony, 3 Best Students Awards were presented.  Other awards presented included the Best Teacher Awards for the MDTS and DDTS teachers.  Outstanding lecturers were also recognised with Commendation Certificates.

    

MDTS 2004
In December 2004, the MDTS 2004 students successfully completed the common curriculum phase in NUS.  They are now in NPS for the specialization phase.

MDTS 2005
The MDTS 4th Intake which started lessons on 27 June 2005 and has completed the 1st quarter of the programme.  It is now in the 2nd quarter of the MDTS programme.  We have 31 students in this intake, of which 3 are international studetns.



Restructuring of MDTS Programme
NUS Senate has approved the paper on the restructuring of the MDTS Programme.  Under the joint NUS-NPS MDTS Programme, students will be conferred 2 independent degrees, the M.Sc. (DTS) degree from NUS and a M.Sc. (Specialization) degree from either NPS or NUS depending on their field of specialization.
 

Research

Completed Projects

  • Two collaborative projects with NPS on Digital Antenna Systems for UAV and Radar & Communications Applications were completed.
     

  • The April 2005 call for Research Proposals attracted 20 topics.  These were at the final stage of evaluation.
     

Seminars and Conferences

Seminars and conferences offer opportunities for ideas sharing among intellectuals, students and the industry. TDSI organized seminars on these topics in the recent 10 months.

Future Vision for the Naval Postgraduate School : A response to the crisis facing our
   National Security Science and Technology Workforce
Prof Leonard Ferrari, Dean of Research in NPS and Prof Peter Purdue, Associate Dean of Research in NPS, together they presented the topic on "Future Vision for the Naval Postgraduate School : A response to the crisis facing our National Security Science and Technology Workforce" on 8 July 2005 at EA Auditorium.



Multidisciplinary Studies
Ofer Gonen was the Best Student from the MDTS 2003/04 batch.  His presentation topic was "Multidisciplinary Studies", which he focused on the multidisciplinary studies in Israel, during and after graduation on 8 July 2005 at EA Auditorium. 



Boyd's OODA Loops and Operations Research
On 8 July 2005,
Prof Bard Mansager, a Senior Lecturer from the Maths Department in NPS presented "Boyd's OODA Loops and Operations Research".

Prof Kenneth L. Davidson Seminar
Prof Kenneth Davidson, Professor of Meteorology, NPS, was in TDSI to conduct seminars on 11 and 12 July 2005 to some 80 students and other guests on the following topics:

  • Estimating atmosphere effects on RF propagation and

  • Estimating atmosphere effects on EO propagation

Laboratory sessions were held for students to have hands-on on AREPS and TAWS software programmes.

    
 

Current Affairs in TDSI

Visit by Dr Steve Murray
Dr Steve Murray, accompanied by Dr Amer Hameed, of RMCS visited TDSI on 10 March 2005.  This event gave TDSI a better understanding of RMCS and its education programme.  Similarly, the visitors also learned of TDSI's capabilities.  In so doing, both parties agreed to explore collaborative teaching and research.  This visit also paved the way for TDSI's September 2005 visit to RMCS.

Visit to US Naval Postgraduate School (NPS)

(1)  From 13 to 15 April 2005, Director Temasek Defence Systems Institute (TDSI) led a team to NPS to fine-tune processes and procedures for collaboration between the two institutions.  The TDSI team was warmly received and hosted by Prof Leonard Ferrari (Associate Provost and Dean of Research, NPS) and Prof Peter Purdue (Associate Dean of Research, NPS)

(2)  Major agreements reached between TDSI and NPS during the visit include :

  • Having jointly-supervised research thesis as an alternative to the Integration Project for the award of the M.Sc. (DTS) degree under the MDTS programme.
     

  • Having a jointly-supervised mini-project as an alternative to the NPS-administered coursework modules for students on the Land Systems Specialization Track.
     

  • Establishing parameters and procedures to allow students to read alternate but relevant coursework modules other than those specified in the respective specialization degree course matrix under the MDTS programme.
     

  • Engaging Mr Brian Steckler, an expert in the field of Information Operations, to teach in the MDTS Programme.
     

  • Successful interviewing of 2 US Navy candidates for admission into the 2005 intake of the MDTS programme.
     

  • Reviewing the existing FMS mechanism to pay for services rendered by NPS and exploring alternative approaches.
     

  • Discussion with individual NPS Professors on rendering their teaching services to the DDTS Programme for 2006 and beyond.

Visit by Prof Boerner
Prof Boerner from University of lllinois at Chicago visit TDSI in June 2005.  During his short stay, he delivered seminars on "The Integrated Search for Earthquake Electromagnetic Precursors and for Infrasonic Imaging of far-distant approaching tsunamis" and "From Airborne VIA Dones to Space-borne Polarimetric-interferometric SAR Environmental Stress-change Monitoring - a Comparative Assessment of its Applications" on 21 and 23 June 2005 respectively.

Visit by Prof Leonard Ferrari and Prof Peter Purdue
NPS Associate Provost and Dean of Research Prof Leonard Ferrari, accompanied by Prof Peter Purdue visited Singapore from 4-9 July 2005.  Highlights of their visit included participation in the NUS Commencement Ceremony on 7 July 2005 where the second cohort of MDTS graduates received their degree scrolls from President SR Nathan.  Apart from discussing development of the collaborative educations programmes with TDSI, they also visited TMSI, CRISP, Temasek Laboratories and other facilities in NUS.  They also visited Port of Singapore Authority, Singapore Technologies Ltd, DSTA, DSO to understand their operations.  They called on Permanent Secretary (Def Devt) and Provost of NUS to strengthen the existing warm relationships.  Moreover, these visitors delivered a talk on "The Future of NPS".

TDSI Team Building Session
Staff and families of TDSI came together for its 1st Team Building Session on the 9 July 2005 at Costa Sands Resort (Downtown East).  The event aims to strengthen its esprit de corps and build up team spirit among staff members.  The evening ended with a BBQ.

    


Visit by Prof Wayne Hughes
NPS Dean of Graduate School of Information Systems, Prof Wayne Hughes visited Singapore from 23-31 August 2005.  Besides participating in SAFTI MI's 10th Anniversary celebrations, he visited TDSI on 29 August 2005 to update TDSI on development at NPS and the MDTS programme.
 

Upcoming Events

  • Prof James Kays, a member of TDSI Management Board and Dean, Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at NPS will visit Singapore from 7-11 November 2005.  The TDSI Management Board would hold its 8th meeting on 8 November 2005 via video link while Prof James Kays is in Singapore.
     

  • Enrolment of MDTS 2006.
     

  • Enrolment of DDTS 2006.
